FAQs

What is pelvic floor therapy?

Pelvic floor therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy that treats the muscles supporting the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. A trained therapist assesses how these muscles work, then uses exercises, manual techniques, and education to help them strengthen, relax, or coordinate better.

What is the pelvic floor?

It is a group of muscles and connective tissue running like a sling from the pubic bone to the tailbone. It supports the pelvic organs and helps control urination, bowel movements, and sexual function.

What conditions can pelvic floor therapy help with?

It is commonly used for urinary or bowel leakage (incontinence), urgency and frequent urination, constipation and painful bowel movements, pelvic pain and tailbone pain, pain during intercourse, pelvic organ prolapse, pregnancy and postpartum recovery, and recovery after pelvic or abdominal surgery.

Who can benefit from pelvic floor therapy?

Women, men, and children can all have pelvic floor problems. It is not only for people who have given birth. Athletes, people with chronic pain, and people recovering from surgery or prostate treatment can also benefit.

What are the signs of pelvic floor dysfunction?

Common signs include leaking urine when you cough or exercise, a sudden strong urge to urinate, difficulty emptying your bladder or bowels, pelvic pressure or heaviness, and ongoing pain in the pelvis, lower back, or hips. Symptoms are common, but they are not something you have to accept as normal.

What happens at my first appointment?

Your therapist will ask about your symptoms, medical history, and goals in a private setting. They may assess posture, breathing, movement, and pelvic floor muscle function. An internal exam is sometimes used to get the most accurate information, but you are always in control of what happens, and you can decline any part of it. Together you will agree on a treatment plan.

Does pelvic floor therapy hurt?

It should not cause significant pain. Some techniques can feel uncomfortable if muscles are tight or tender, so tell your therapist as soon as something feels like too much, and they will adjust.

Are Kegel exercises the right treatment for everyone?

No. Kegels strengthen muscles, but some people have pelvic floor muscles that are too tight, and for them extra squeezing can make symptoms worse. An assessment shows whether you need strengthening, relaxation, or both.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your condition and how long you have had symptoms. Many people attend weekly or every other week for a number of weeks and practice exercises at home between visits. Your therapist will give you an estimate after your evaluation and review progress as you go.

Do I need a referral from a doctor?

Requirements vary by location and insurance plan. [Add your policy here, for example: “You can book directly with us” or “Some insurance plans require a referral.”]

Is pelvic floor therapy covered by insurance?

Many plans cover physical therapy, but coverage varies. [Add accepted insurers and how to verify benefits.]

Is pelvic floor therapy safe during pregnancy and after birth?

Yes, when guided by a qualified therapist. It can help with back and pelvic pain during pregnancy, prepare the body for delivery, and support recovery afterward. Speak with your doctor or midwife about when to begin after birth.

When should I see a doctor instead?

See a doctor promptly for blood in your urine or stool, sudden severe pelvic pain, fever with urinary symptoms, or inability to pass urine. Pelvic floor therapy works alongside medical care and does not replace it.
